    I'm curious if you are still pro-Mitt in light of his now infamous remarks on the 47%?

      Ah, well. The problem is that I very much do not want to vote for my neighbor anymore. I am disappointed in the way Mitt has been handling things during the campaign, but I no longer have any hope (faith, trust) in his opponent.

    I can certainly see why one would be disillusioned with Obama. What I can't see is how Romney is better. It seems like a choice between "not great" and "worse still"--in which case, I'm inclined to choose "not great."

      Me, too. We just disagree on which is "not great"! Actually, I think Ryan is probably better, but that is a longer conversation and I am still at the learning stage on much of this.

This is the last post I wanted to write, but it has become clear that if I do not write it, I will never write anything else. So here goes. This time last year I was preparing my file to submit to my department in expectation of being promoted to full professor. I probably don’t need to say any more, you can all check my title on the department web page now—go ahead , I’ll wait—although as one benefit, as part of the review process I did have to write statements about my research and teaching which I have posted on my academic home page as introductions to my method and goals. I got the news—I kid you not—on Friday the 13th. In April. Seven months ago. Since when, I have been living a lie. Or a half truth. Or...oh, fuck it, it sucks. Because it is nonsense, of course. Almost every day that I allow myself online (a.k.a. daily), I end up in an argument about my credibility as a historian. As Owen’s alter ego Ira might put it (with appropriate snark), “How dare you claim to be a historian when you believe [fill in the blank some detail about whatever topic is under discussion]?”* Well, quite possibly because as a historian, I am used to having to revise my understand of “what actually happened” based on re-evaluation of what we accept as historical sources.  For example, Bede’s history of the English church.
