*With thanks to my son for formatting the nifty borders. Now he is making his evil sock monkey fly down from the loft in our hotel room. I just saw a slinky swing past.... I wonder what this says about the relationship between God, details, creativity and play?

    nice images
    one of my favorite blogs and one that has inspired other blogs is copenhagencyclechic ... bicycling is something I enjoy. I often find my own solacment in bicycling..I suppose my own personalized relationship with God in my own way.

    On the other hand, this is something my son (age 12) can teach me, and this is a great gift. But then, of course, I suppose online tutorials won't drop sock monkeys on your head. :)

    ...maybe this all very simply means that God is everywhere where we want God to be, in the paintings as well as in the artists who made them, in the real flower and in the skill required to make the painted one, in the burning candle and in the person who takes time out to light one, in the churches and on the streets, and in the sock and the child who is at play ... if we want to see God (Christian or other, no matter) we can and do. PS: Very beautiful pictures indeed.

This is the last post I wanted to write, but it has become clear that if I do not write it, I will never write anything else. So here goes. This time last year I was preparing my file to submit to my department in expectation of being promoted to full professor. I probably don’t need to say any more, you can all check my title on the department web page now—go ahead , I’ll wait—although as one benefit, as part of the review process I did have to write statements about my research and teaching which I have posted on my academic home page as introductions to my method and goals. I got the news—I kid you not—on Friday the 13th. In April. Seven months ago. Since when, I have been living a lie. Or a half truth. Or...oh, fuck it, it sucks. Because it is nonsense, of course. Me, writing political commentary?! Stranger things have happened, like, for instance, having a candidate for president who is intelligent and articulate and able to put issues before what the other candidate's campaign is saying about him personally. So, I watched the debate Wednesday night with increasing hope and concern: is it possible that America might go so far as to elect a president who, while rich*, was also at the top of his class in school?
