Imperial America

Image
Once upon a time, there was a colony that revolted against its ancestral kings and established itself as a republic.  The people of the former colony constituted a government in which the men of the republic voted for their administrative officials by tribe, each of which was determined geographically, not ethnically or by kinship groups. Having established a government, the new state began extending its authority by conquest and trade, until eventually it controlled a vast region previously occupied by multiple peoples, including several older empires.  Although citizenship was initially limited to the members of the founding tribes, over the centuries, as more and more nations were absorbed (or coerced) into the empire, the franchise was extended even to those whose ancestors had no association whatsoever with the founding of the state. These new citizens saw themselves as fully “native,” regardless of where they came from, within or without the empire. They adopted the...

Ordinary Time

Image
“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” In other words, it was ordinary time! Which means lots of ongoing projects which I would love to tell you about! First—and most important for those of you who follow me only here on the blog, particularly by email—feedburner is discontinuing its email service as of July 2021, which means you are going to need to sign up to follow me on social media if you want nudges about when I have posted on the blog.  Don’t worry! I am easy to find! Amazingly, I am still on Facebook, both under my personal and professional accounts, but I am also out there in the wild on a variety of other platforms, and I promise to let you know when new blog posts go up!  My Facebook Author Page, Twitter, and Gab are best if you just want notices about my blog posts and videos (see below). My Facebook Profile is best for ongoing social, cultural, and political commentary. Telegram is best for those who want to go out on the edge—and write poetry (see...

Big Bear and the Trinitarians

Image
It was just supposed to be an interview... A conversation between brothers who have both been on the front lines of the culture war. But then came the quiz... ...with all the answers tending towards one sacred number. At which point the true purpose of the meeting was made clear. “This isn’t an interview.” “This is an intervention.” Milo invites three Catholic intellectuals into a livestream with the Big Bear to talk about the Trinity. Who walks out first?! For wisdom is more active than all active things; and reacheth everywhere, by reason of her purity.  For she is a vapour of the power of God, and a certain pure emmanation of the glory of the Almighty God: and therefore no defiled thing cometh into her. For she is the brightness of eternal light, and the unspotted mirror of God's majesty, and the image of his goodness. —Wisdom of Solomon 7:24-26 And the moral of the story is...? You decide! Centrism Games: A Modern Dunciad

Image
DCR Books, in conjunction with the poets of the Dragon Common Room , is proud to announce the publication of its first full-length poem!   Hello? Is this thing on? It’s time to sing! Beneath the Arch, let heartfelt praises ring! Forsake us not, o mild and moderate goddess! With fair and balanced rhymes we beg your largesse. Help us narrate the story of your knights and how they braved the un-forbidding heights. We sing with measured tones, not high nor low, our tolerance and fairness to extol. Chivalry is dead. These Knights want Fame. And Fama’s a witch. Follow a band of very different Knights on their quest to become the most balanced, the most tolerant, the most compromising of everyone on the modern political spectrum. Each Knight dares to liberalize and conserve, but who will win the ultimate prize and stay safely in the center? A cautionary tale modeled on Alexander Pope’s scathing eighteenth-century Dunciad . —Backcover You know  the backstory . Now read the book! Avail...
